| JOHN Smith born 1856 at first he was a gardener sometime after 1871 he worked at High Shield Quarry nr Hexham and was killed while working there. The report in the Hexham Courant 6 April 1878 say's "On Monday forenoon, a young man, named John Smith, 21 years of age, son of Mr Robert Smith, gardener, Hexham, met with his death while working in High Shield Quarry, near Hexham. Deceased was in the employ of Messrs Rutherford, Forster, and Stobart, fire brick manufacturers at Corbridge, and was engaged in taking the "bearing" off a seam of fire clay. A companion who was working with him left (about a quarter of an hour before deceased was found) to go to a neighbouring cabin in which they sharpen their tools. Whitfield Jackson, a cart-man in the employ of the same firm, found the deceased about ten o'clock, laying covered, with the exception of his head, with soil and stones, and quite dead. It is surmised that owing to the recent hard frost, the clay had fallen sooner than the deceased expected, and that the falling earth had crushed and killed him. He was conveyed to his home in Gilesgate. On Tuesday, an inquest on the body was held before the deputy-coroner, Mr Green, at the North Eastern Hotel, Hexham. the jury returned a verdict of "accidental death" was returned.- the body of the deceased was interred in Hexham Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev P.W.Clarke, curate, being the officiating clergyman. Deceased was a member of the Sunflower Lodge, No, 1247, of the United Free gardeners, and about 40 members of that Order swelled the ranks of the funeral cortege. Mr F.W.Millwood, P.M., also read the funeral service of the Order." | ||||

![]() Ethel Smith on right, with Thomas Mackenzie. |
ETHEL MARY Smith was born 4 January 1904 (my 1st grand child, a girl was
born exactly 100 years later) Ethel was born in Corbridge, she married
Thomas Mackenzie in April 1921 at Felton and they had three children.
Ethel had a shop in her front room at West Chevington, the shop sold
everything, while Thomas was a POW she moved to Amble, which is where
they lived when I knew them. I used to spend my holidays with them, Granda would take me to his allotment and to see the horses. I would go to school with Nana, where she was a dinner lady, she also used to look after the chickens at the "big" school and we would collect the eggs from there. I used to "help" her with the baking, she made the nicest cheese scones I have ever tasted. And of course we talked, she would talk about her family, as a child you don't really take it in, but as I got older I started making notes, but of course there are still so many things I would love to ask, but now it is too late.
